Concerns about Formula 1 legend Flavio Briatore (73). The former Benetton and Renault team boss had to undergo unplanned heart surgery. In a video published on Instagram, Briatore explains that during a routine examination, doctors discovered a benign tumor in the heart, which was surgically removed at short notice.

The tumor was removed using a minimally invasive endoscopic technique at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. The Italian immediately assures us that the operation ‘went perfectly’. He was in the hospital for ten days and is now doing well again. Briatore thanks the medical team, as well as his ex-wife Elisabetta Gregoraci and their son Nathan Falco, who came especially from Monaco to support him.

Briatore already had kidney cancer

“Prevention is important,” Briatore continues to address his fans in the video. “I regularly go for preventive care, and two years ago there was nothing. Now suddenly there was this growth. This should make it clear to all of us that nothing beats precaution.” Before the tumor, he had already survived kidney cancer in 2006.

Briatore was team boss at Benetton from 1989 to 1997, where he celebrated two world titles together with Michael Schumacher (55) (1994 and 1995). Briatore returned in 2000 and 2001, but at the time the racing team raced under the name Benetton-Renault. From 2002 it only carried the name Renault, where the Italian was team boss until 2009. With Fernando Alonso (42) he achieved two more World Cup successes (2005 to 2006).

Following the Crash Gate scandal, Briatore retired in 2009, but has since remained active behind the scenes in Formula 1. The 73-year-old is still Alonso’s manager to this day.
