If you’re looking for good shark movies, Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece Jaws is a long time coming. Still worth checking out, but by no means a landmark, is Renny Harlin’s “Deep Blue Sea” (“Die Hard 2”). The shark actor has gathered a loyal following over the years, which isn’t surprising, as Deep Blue Sea is a lot of fun with its silliness (and super voracious sharks) on display.
If we’re lucky, the shark horror genre, which is really understaffed with useful movies, could get another good rep soon. As has since been announced, Renny Harlin is currently working on a new comic, which will be universally titled “deep waterwill wear – and in that, sharks will again cause a lot of terror.
This is deep water
Deep Water follows a group of international passengers whose plane from Los Angeles to Shanghai crash lands in shark-infested waters. Terrified, the humans are forced to work together and gradually overcome their differences in order to somehow survive. The problem is not only the slowly sinking plane, but also the sharks, who are on a rampage.
That sounds like a premise that promises a thoroughly sharp and ferocious shark rip. And actually Renny Harlin is just the right man for this material. Actually. Gone are the days when Finnish filmmakers produced really good genre films, such as Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger or Deadly Christmas. With “Devil’s Pass”, “The Legend Of Hercules”, “Skiptrace” or “The Misfits”, Harlin has not shrouded herself in fame at all in recent years.
Nevertheless, we hope that with “Deep Water” Harlin finds his old power again – or at least provides proof that he is still a thoroughly experienced craftsman.
