Party at 3,563.31 meters above sea level: The world’s highest vineyard is opened here.

For a long time, the vineyards in the high valley of the Salta Region in Argentina were considered the highest vineyards in the world. But in 2013, vines began to be planted in remote Tibet with the support of the local government. It soon became clear that at an altitude of more than 3,500 meters, you had to apply a different type of viticulture than in the lowlands.

In 2018, Pure Land and Super High Altitude Vineyards in Cai Na Xiang, Tibet, were recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s tallest vineyard. Behind him is the company Rong Shun Biotechnology Development Ltd, about which little is known.

High demands on viticulture

While extreme altitudes mean more sunlight and less risk of disease for the vines, Tibet also faces serious challenges: temperature drops, drought, sunburn on grapes, severe summer storms, sandstorms and early frosts – exactly a picnic for winemakers. not.

To overcome these challenging conditions, smart irrigation systems and relatively late harvesting are used to fully mature the grapes.

Expansion and wine tourism

There are talks of increasing the size of the Cai Na Xiang vineyard to over 600 hectares by 2022, as well as bringing tourism to the remote area, creating jobs for the local mountain people.

The future will show how good the wines taste and whether they are on par with Argentinean wines.
