We humans are creatures of habits. If we enjoy something, we have found our passion. Soft tracks, steep slopes, snow and amusement parks, race tracks and dusty areas. The winter paradise in front of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau makes the hearts of skiers and snowboarders beat faster. In the Jungfrau Ski Area, which is among the most beautiful peaks in the world, 211 kilometers of perfectly well-kept tracks await snow lovers.
But we have to think outside the box more often. Sometimes there are activities that we enjoy as well. You don’t always have to ski in the winter!
Those who think that only children enjoy sledding are definitely missing out. More than 50 kilometers of perfectly maintained toboggan runs await anyone who loves action in the Jungfrau Ski Area. The winter paradise in the Bernese Oberland even boasts the longest toboggan run in the world. To enjoy the 15-kilometer route called “Big Pintenfritz”, you have to follow a marked winter hiking trail from Grindelwald First to Faulhorn. You should plan two and a half hours for the hike to the highest point. You will be rewarded with an outstanding all-round view of the mountains and a fast-paced toboggan ride. The journey back to the valley takes about 30 minutes.
Let’s leave the skis, snowboard and sled in the basement. A feeling of complete freedom can only be experienced in the air. Falling off a tightrope is definitely something for the brave. Being in First Flieger is easy and freedom is limitless. Up to four people, optimally secured to a fixed seat belt, race at top speeds of 84 km/h on an 800-metre-long steel cable from First to Schreckfeld. In some places, adventurers fly about 50 meters above mountain pastures.
With the First Glider, on the other hand, you are not running down the mountain while sitting, you are hanging on a rope on your stomach and descending the mountain upside down. In the glider modeled on an eagle, up to four people float in a hang glider-like fashion. First pulls First Glider from Schreckfeld to First at 72 points. However, on the way back, the eagle really takes off. He and his flightmates buzz along the 800-metre long flight path at speeds of up to 83 km/h. Well, who dares?
Winter walks are in fashion. No wonder it has its own special charm. On well-maintained roads, all you can hear is the crunch of your shoes in the snow. It’s even quieter when you snowshoe through the soft white. Away from the hustle and bustle of the slopes, snow walkers can immerse themselves in magical winter landscapes of solemn silence. You can tirelessly trample your feet in the Jungfrau Ski Area. It takes a long time to discover the 100 kilometers of winter hiking trails by yourself. In boots, get ready, go!
The Jungfrau Ski Region has the highest music festival in Switzerland on the last weekend of March. On 26 March at SnowpenAir in Mannlichen, Andreas Gabalier will present the best folk rock ‘n’ roll show for boys and girls. “We’re going to apply full thrust at these heights, too,” says the Austrian singer. It is also useful to keep your eyes open on ski slopes. “I like to stand on skis and when I come to SnowpenAir I can combine that immediately.” Maybe you’ll meet the HECHT folks, too. The Swiss band will be on the SnowpenAir stage the previous day, on March 25. Other weekend shows include 77 Bombay Street, Joya Marleen, Nils Burri, The Monroes and Kandlbauer.
Two years ago, the Jungfrau Ski Area returned to the winter sports Champions League with the opening of the V-Bahn. Since then, the ski area can be reached much faster. Eiger Express, the world’s most modern three-wheeled gondola, takes its passengers to the Eigergletscher station and thus directly to the runways in just 15 minutes. From Grindelwald Terminal, you can reach Jungfraujoch in 45 minutes. Or drop your skis at the Eiger Glacier and travel in comfort to Jungfraujoch – Europe’s Peak in 25 minutes. Nowhere else does the winter wonderland present itself in such a beautiful way. In Jungfraujoch, the icy air caresses your face, the snow crackles under your feet and the view takes your breath away.
