New this week on Netflix: The grand finale of one of the funniest sitcoms and Adam Driver as the Hitler expert

Like every Sunday, we’ve got a roundup of some of the potential highlights that await us on Netflix in the coming week. So you can already fill your watchlist and reserve the titles. As always, this isn’t a complete overview of all new releases, but we’ve picked out for each day what we think might be of particular interest to you.

As always, the preview is based on Netflix’s announcements at the time of release. In rare cases, changes can occur at very short notice. In particular, additional titles may appear that we did not have on our radar. But enough of the forewords: let’s get started with the Netflix highlights of the week from December 26, 2022 to January 1, 2023.

Monday: Spy thriller starring “Daredevil”.

Brand new on Netflix for Boxing Day and kicking off the week is the miniseries “treason“. The spy thriller stars Charlie Cox from “Daredevil” as an aspiring MI6 agent whose life is turned upside down when he meets a Russian spy (played by Olga Kurylenko). We haven’t seen the series yet, but the first trailer looks promising:

We can definitely recommend the alcoholic basketball drama “The Way Back” entitled “Out Of Play – The way back‘ played in German cinemas. Ben Affleck gives a “thrilling performance” that is “the showpiece of a touching realistic drunken drama,” as we note in our 4-star review.

Tuesday: time for the watchlist

Surprisingly, Tuesday is the only day of the week so far for which Netflix hasn’t announced a new title yet. This can always change at short notice, but your watch list is at least as full as the author of these lines, so you have plenty of material for the rest. Or do you still need inspiration? Then we have a streaming tip for you here:

Wednesday: A new original from Poland

Recently, some Netflix original movies from Poland have been very successful. They were directed like the “365 Days” movies or some horror works (e.g. “My Friends Are All Dead”) more towards an adult audience – and despite the title, that is also the case with “A night at kindergarten” Not different: The focus here is on a kindergarten nativity scene, which gets out of hand, but in the end the comedy is mostly about a young man who doesn’t want to accept that his girlfriend’s son should be kicked out of kindergarten and therefore starts a wild arguing with other parents and staff.

Thursday: Netflix hit is already in its 13th (!) Season

Since 2009, super agent Sterling Malory Archer has been saving the world for the International Secret Intelligence Service (ISIS) led by his overbearing mother. His work has already taken him into space and he has even been in a coma for several (!) seasons (this season’s episodes are set in his dream world). Let’s see what the makers can come up with for him now. Now in its 13th season, the adult-oriented animated series “archer‘ will be available to stream on Netflix starting Thursday.

Friday: Finally there is the finale of one of the funniest sitcoms

Forgive the author of these lines for calling it a comedy series two movie highlights ago. Yet Hardly any sitcom in recent years has been as exciting as the adventures of the colorful police force from “Brooklyn Nine Nine“. In 2021, the series came to an end in the US and now the ten last episodes of the eighth season are coming to Germany with a delay of more than a year.

The movies mentioned are on the one hand the new Netflix originalwhite noise“. The satire starring Adam Driver as a professor of Hitler studies and Greta Gerwig as his secretly addicted wife, which gets carried away when everyone around them gets scared, will be available exclusively on Netflix starting Friday after a short theatrical run. In the 4-star FILMSTARTS review, we come to the conclusion: “A satire at once bitter and playful, about the (irrational) terror of death, which traditionally spreads most violently, especially among those who currently have nothing to do.”

In addition, there are, among others also “A quiet place 2Streaming now on Netflix. In the horror sequel, Emily Blunt, as a mother with her children, is not allowed to squeak to successfully hide from alien killers.

Saturday: A pirate for children

Very few people spend much time at Netflix on New Year’s Eve – so it’s not surprising that the streaming service has barely announced any major reboots. The few are also more geared towards the little ones – so too the film adaptation of the pirate children’s book series “Captain Sharky‘, which was released in theaters in 2018 and is now available to stream.

Sunday: A more than unusual serial experiment

Normally, the beginning of the month is the day when Netflix brings all the licensed titles it’s purchased onto the platform and there’s a lot of Hollywood backlog. It’s different this time. The majority of these titles will not be released until January 4, 2023. Instead, alongside a few purchased (mostly) German films, comes an unusual series experiment for the new year:

In the thriller series “Kaleidoskop”, a criminal genius embodied by “Breaking Bad” villain Giancarlo Esposito plans the greatest heist of all time with a group of specialists – at first it sounds a lot like “Heist of Money”. The special thing about “Kaleidoscope”: there is no fixed order of episodes!

You have to watch the episodes in whatever order you want. Depending on how you organize the eight episodes yourself, the story develops its own dynamics. What is the big reveal in the final for one, the other may already know since the opening episode. How does it work and how does it work? We will know on January 1, 2023.

Well-known railways follow on the other sideThe good doctor“. The hit series starring Freddie Highmore as the autistic avenger of Dr. House is now entering the next round on Netflix. The fourth season will be available from January 1, 2023.

And to finish Another special insider tip: the Japanese series “Old Enough” consists only of the fact that each episode is accompanied by a different child (actually much too small for that) with the camera, as it is running an errand without the parents. When a four-year-old is briefly asked to squeeze and deliver fresh orange juice for the family working in the fields, or when a two-year-old is asked to buy a flounder from the local fishmonger, the most hilarious stories – wonderfully accompanied by a slightly mocking, but still loving off commentary.

The previous episodes, between 7 and 20 minutes, are perfect good mood entertainment for in between. As of January 1, Netflix has a second season and many new episodes of the cult reality TV show that has been running in Japan since 1991.
