This is how you make wine glasses shine again

It is not so easy to get wine glasses completely clean and without traces. Fragile parts often remain in the dishwasher. However, this comes with a few problems: The streaks after the wash cycle can give the impression that the wine glasses are not being washed properly.

Many delicate wine glasses made of the finest crystal are not dishwasher safe. Also, minor detergent residues can leave a distinct dishwasher odour. Wines from such glasses often have a penetrating metallic and chemical odor that degrades the perceived quality of the wine.

Clean wine glasses in the dishwasher

Not everyone in the dishwasher group like me needs to wash their wine glasses by hand. For this to be successful, you need to consider a few important points: First, you should check if your glasses are dishwasher safe. You can find the corresponding symbols or instructions on the packaging or under the glass.

I quickly rinse the wine glasses with tap water before putting them in the dishwasher. There, I choose a special glass program that works with a weaker jet of water and a lower temperature. The dishwashing liquid or tablets should be gentle because there are no stubborn oil stains to remove. Important: Never wash your glasses with dirty pans or dishes.

As soon as the wash cycle is finished, I take the still slightly damp wine glasses out of the dishwasher and wipe them dry with a clean microfiber cloth. In this way, I prevent the formation of unsightly lines on the windows. Before I put it in the closet, I do a little odor check: If the glasses smell like dish soap, I hand wash them briefly under cold water.

And this is how it is done by hand

If you have the time and desire to hand wash your wine glasses, you should go step by step to achieve a perfect result. First wash the glasses in warm water with a little detergent and use a soft, non-abrasive sponge. Then, rinse the wine glasses that have been cleanly washed in the meantime under cold water to remove any soap residue.

Then dry the soap-free, clean wine glasses with a microfiber, cotton or linen polishing cloth. If the cloth is not clean and has been used for several days, for example, to dry hands, you will ruin your entire job.

Many wine glasses break easily and some are simply blown through very thin glass. If you hold the glass by its foot while polishing, you may break the glass in the worst case. It is therefore important to fix the wine glass to the bottom of the glass. The best way to check if glasses are completely clean and streak-free is under a lamp or near a window in daylight.
