For series fans, Netflix is bringing a very special highlight to its program this week: after 2.5 years of waiting, the sixth season of the adventure series ‘Outlander’ is finally available to subscribers of the streaming service. But action fans will also get their money’s worth in the coming days, with the addition of ‘Hellboy: Call Of Darkness’ and ‘The Contractor – Double Game’ to the virtual Netflix shelf. There are also highlights in the field of documentary, horror and comedy.
But see for yourself the carefully selected selection of new releases in the week of January 29 to February 4, 2024 on Netflix:
Monday: Shark thriller to scare you
The week starts with a lot of tension and the drug thriller “Deep fear – Dive for your life!”, which made cinemas unsafe for the first time in October 2023. In it, a young diving instructor (Mãdãlina Ghenea) is surprised during a yacht trip to Grenada by a storm and two shipwrecked sailors looking for a sunken shipment of cocaine. In addition to Ghenea, Marcus Adams’ thriller not only features shark action, but also “Gossip Girl” star Ed Westwick. In our FILMSTARTS review we gave the film 2.5 stars, while Thorsten Hanisch writes: “The beautiful photos with a holiday feeling and the successful underwater shots are plus points, but cannot fully develop their potential due to the weak script.”
Tuesday: Fast-paced documentary series
The documentary series is also exciting on Tuesday “NASCAR: full speed” by Jackie Decker and Tim Mullen. The five episodes are dedicated to the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series with its associated playoffs and championship races. The focus is on the drivers and their teams, taking their fans behind the scenes of the adrenaline-charged battles for the popular motorsport title, which put not only physical but also emotional pressure on the athletes. Included are Ryan Blaney, William Byron, Ross Chastain and Denny Hamlin.
Wednesday: Moving history
On Wednesday we continue with a documentary highlight that looks at the life of Alexander the Great. In “Alexander the Great: How He Became a God” The historical figure’s life is examined in more detail, as is his impact as a conqueror and military leader on world history. Interviews with experts and archaeological finds provide the background, while individual scenes are also reenacted on film. In the reenactments, Buck Braithwaite takes on the role of the Macedonian ruler.
Thursday: Comic demons, action and detectives
More than a decade after ‘Hellboy – The Golden Army’, a sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Hellboy’, hit theaters, the horror master’s work was deliberately ignored and started over, based on the popular Dark Horse comic series about the half-demon . That’s how we got it “Hellboy – Call of Darkness” In 2019, this time, directed by Neil Marshall (“The Descent”), an adventure full of horror and fantasy was served in cinemas, introducing “Stanger Things” star David Harbor in the role of the comic book hero. In our FILMSTARTS review Oliver Kube gave it three stars and wrote: “The much more brutal reboot is entertaining without being completely convincing. Certainly not a disappointment, but there would still be some room for improvement in a teased sequel.”
Maybe you’ll still be in the actioner on Thursday “The Contractor – Doubles” with Wesley Snipes again or take a look “November Criminals” in which Ansel Elgort (“Baby Driver”) and Chloe Grace Moretz (“Kick-Ass”) chase through the city as amateur investigators.
Friday: breather
After this busy week, treat yourself to a little break on Friday before moving on to more highlights over the weekend.
Saturday: season 6 of a successful series
After two and a half years it takes precedence “Foreigner”-Fans on Netflix, because the sixth season of the adventurous romance is finally coming to the streaming service. While there are six brand new episodes to watch, it’s not entirely clear yet whether they will be released weekly or all at once. So you can definitely look forward to the first episode of season six, where you will be reunited with Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan). The seventh season of the successful series can now be found as video-on-demand Amazon*. With an eighth season already confirmed, the adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s “Highland Saga” is finally coming to an end.
Sunday: Seth Rogen and an acting legend
Sunday ends the week with light meals and presents Anne Fletchers “on the road with mom” in the streaming program on Netflix. In it, Seth Rogen (“Bad Neighbors”) and acting legend Barbara Streisand (“Funny Girl”) go on a road trip across the US as a mother-son duo to promote an organic cleaner. The son’s husband has a plan to set up his mother, who has been widowed for years, with some ex-flames… In our FILMSTARTS review there were 3 stars for the comedy, about which Christoph Petersen writes: “Two big stars in a heartfelt mother-son road movie – but unfortunately the really good jokes in ‘On the Road with Mum’ only appear in the end credits.”
