US Republicans are continuing proceedings for the possible impeachment of Democratic Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The Homeland Security Committee in the House of Representatives formalized its allegations against the minister on Sunday. On migration and border security, they accuse him of “deliberately and systematically” refusing to follow the law. In addition, Mayorkas “knowingly provided false information.” The Republican-controlled committee plans to vote on the text on Tuesday.
The next step would be a vote in the House of Representatives, where Republicans have a narrow majority. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has called a snap vote. The other chamber of Congress, the Senate, would then have to decide whether the minister should be removed from office. US President Joe Biden’s Democrats have a narrow majority there.
It is therefore unlikely that Mayorkas can ultimately be removed from office. However, an impeachment proceeding in an election year would draw even more attention to the issue of migration and border security. Mayorkas is an enemy of many Republicans who accuse Biden’s Democrats of losing control over protection of the US southern border.
Former US President Donald Trump, who wants to return to the White House in the November elections, violently attacked Biden again during an appearance in Las Vegas. “Rather than fight the states on the border, I will use all the resources and powers of the President to defend the United States of America from this terrible invasion that is taking place.”
Biden, who also wants to participate in the elections again, is coming under increasing pressure over the issue. On the one hand, his opponents are propelling him forward in the election campaign. On the other hand, Republicans in Congress are blocking further US aid to Ukraine, which is under attack by Russia, in the dispute over a stricter asylum policy.
Biden therefore recently changed his tone on the subject. He pledged to “close the border if it is overloaded” if Congress passes a corresponding bipartisan deal. Trump wants to block such an agreement, which also includes aid to Ukraine. Biden could see an agreement on migration in the election year as a success. (sda/dpa)
