FC St. Gallen had won nine home games in a row since the start of the season. The tenth in a row would have been a new Super League record. But after the 4-1 defeat against Lugano, no one is talking about the missed record anymore. Because Lugano, with the kind support of the VAR and referee, ruined the FCSG record, which now has to be shared with FC Basel.
Exactly one minute and 49 seconds have been played when FCSG captain Lukas Görtler is fouled by his Lugano colleague Jonathan Sabbatini. Görtler unfortunately hits the Ticino player on the shin. Referee Fähndrich lets things continue, everything seems complete. But then VAR Lionel Tschudi suddenly intervenes. He sends an investigator to the TV and has the scene rewatched. Then Fähndrich suddenly draws red against Görtler. It’s not just a joke for ‘blue’ expert Daniel Gigax.
This is the case across the board at St. Gallen. Görtler watches the first half in the stands and keeps shaking his head. And Jordi Quintilla can’t believe he has been sent off the field either. “We don’t develop with VAR at all. The VAR makes sense – but only if the images are viewed correctly. Lukas has the ball and gives crosses. What will he do?” And FCSG coach Peter Zeidler is still angry after the press conference: “The red card was a blatantly wrong decision. Tschudi was VAR – there are so many beautiful courses….”
About the game: After being sent off, Lugano doesn’t really know what to do. The first dangerous action came shortly before half time when Sabbatini took the lead for the Ticino team. After the substitution, Lugano failed three times due to St. Gallen keeper Zigi and the post. On the other side, Möller miserably missed the equalizer twice. Stevanovic then did it – but Lugano then struck ice cold through Celar, Bislimi and Celar again to make the final score 4-1.
But the result is ultimately only of secondary importance – especially for St. Gallen.
