Your throat hurts, your nose is runny, and you sneeze constantly; You might think that cold viruses are having fun making us uncomfortable. If you see that they come with familiar warning signs, you may be prepared for a rather unpleasant week.
We talked to two experts about the easiest way to get rid of a cold: Fabienne Burguière, a doctor who writes books on the subject. And with Hervé Spechbach, deputy head of the outpatient emergency department at the University Hospital of Geneva.

There is no miraculous cure for runny nose, but Hervé Spechbach says it is possible to reduce the intensity and duration of symptoms: “It is known that nasal drops, which are effective against narrowing of blood vessels, can help.” However, it should never be used for more than five days in a row, or its effects may be counterproductive. A possible conclusion in this case: “In response to the drops, the mucosa thickens and nasal congestion worsens.”
According to the doctor, nasal drops that also contain anti-allergic ingredients may be even more effective. Before purchasing such drops, you should of course consult your pharmacist or doctor.

Something else also helps with nasal congestion, says Specchbach: “Rinsing with salt water and gently elevating the head while sleeping may relieve symptoms.”
Doctor Fabienne Burguière states that “inhaling essential oils” helps with “nasal congestion.” If you tolerate it well and are not pregnant, the expert recommends boiling a drop each of mint, rosemary and bay leaf in water: “Then you can inhale the steam under a towel. “The interaction of these three plants helps liquefy mucus and strengthen vitality.”

According to Fabienne Burguière, the most important thing is to strengthen your immune system. This consists of teas made from thyme decoctions and fresh ginger slices with honey and lemon juice. He also recommends taking vitamin C, zinc and vitamin D3, especially in winter or when there are deficiencies. But not without consulting a doctor or pharmacist first.
Although vitamins are almost always associated with persistent colds, Hervé Spechbach emphasizes that there are currently no solid studies favoring one vitamin over another. “It’s all theory, nothing stands out,” he says. But a vitamin-rich diet can actually increase our energy levels when we’re sick.
Speaking of energy, don’t forget to get enough sleep and exercise too!
