A week ago, Marco Schwarz’s (28) season plan was thrown overboard within seconds. The Austrian ski all-rounder fell on the Stelvio and injured himself. Diagnosis: Cruciate ligament tear and meniscus damage.

Instead of continuing to compete in as many races as possible and dueling with Marco Odermatt (26) for the overall World Cup, for him it means: surgery and rehabilitation. Schwarz’s fall caused heated discussions. Marc Girardelli (60), who celebrated World Cup victories in all disciplines, said: “In my opinion, the coaches are partly responsible for Marco’s injury because they have not placed enough emphasis on the recovery of his body in recent months.”

“He was hit”

A statement that surprised Franz Klemm (70). “In my time, top people like Girardelli and Zurbriggen (Pirmin, ed.) also rode all the races,” he tells “Oe24”. The Austrian Olympic downhill champion and world champion from 1976 is convinced that the injury has nothing to do with the heavy load or the busy schedule. In the video you can clearly see: “He was hit and the pressure caused the belt to break while he was driving.”

Austrian head coach Marko Pfeifer describes Girardelli’s statements as unqualified. The whole thing was a “stupid racing accident” because “the way he entered this corner and pushed him into this wave, the knee simply couldn’t handle it.” Pfeifer also does not accept allegations that Schwarz had trained for the giant slalom race. He only rode the warm-up course twice in a sporty manner.

Comeback early next season

Knee specialist Christian Fink also tells ‘Oe24’ that the number of races does not matter. Moreover, only the driver decides whether he wants to start or not. He has also seen Autumn several times and has the same opinion as Klemm. “These types of injuries often happen before the racer falls,” says Fink.

He operated on Schwarz on December 29 and will also guide him during his rehabilitation. Fink is confident of a comeback at the start of the 2024/25 World Cup season. On the one hand, the early timing of the injury helped and on the other hand, the experience Schwarz had after his first ACL tear five years ago.
