Before the MonsterVerse continues on the big screen, we’ll have to be patient: “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is set to hit theaters in April 2024. Starting today, November 17, 2023, the Apple TV+ series ‘Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters’, reminiscent of previously released films in the MonsterVerse (‘Godzilla’, ‘Kong: Skull Island’, “Godzilla 2: King Of The Monsters” and “Godzilla Vs. Kong”).
There are two episodes at the beginning of the series, then a new episode will be released every week. “Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters” has a total of ten episodes. This means the season finale will come to Apple TV+ on January 12, 2024.
2014’s ‘Godzilla’ is especially important
Although ‘Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters’ is set in the MonsterVerse and is of great importance to the universe, the series is mainly seen as a sequel to Gareth Edwards’ ‘Godzilla’, which was released in 2014. Chronologically speaking, the format takes a step back. We are now in a time where the world has just become aware that monsters and titans have existed in the world for years. The battle between Godzilla and the two so-called MUTOs has left a deep mark on the world’s population.
Just like in ‘Godzilla’, the focus in ‘Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters’ is on the fate of man, although here too the gigantic lizard will provide a lot of spectacle. After the Godzilla incident in San Francisco, two siblings (played by Anna Swai and Ren Watabe) investigate their own family’s ties to Monarch, the mysterious organization dedicated to investigating and controlling the Titans.
Another important character for the series is Lee Shaw. This happens at two temporal levels Kurt Russell (“The Thing from Another World”) and his real son Wyatt Russel (“The Falcon And The Winter Soldier”) played. Once in the fifties, once now. Shaw is said to have come into contact with sensitive information about Monarch and therefore poses a problem for the organization.
