Can James Gunn succeed in rebooting the DC universe in cinemas? He at least wants to try – and “Superman: Legacy” is scheduled for 2025. We can expect not only the new Superman actor David Corenswet, who replaces Henry Cavill in this role, but also, for example, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star Rachel Brosnahan as the new Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Green Lanten, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl and many more.
So much so that there has recently been concern in DC fan circles that “Superman: Legacy” could be too crowded – as every major character needs to be given room to develop. James Gunn reassured fans with a perfect explanation for the many characters, and now he’s adding one more to the list. And not only is it relatively new to the comics, but it will also be seen in a live-action film for the first time.
We’re talking about a villain joining the film’s fairly extensive arsenal of villains, and the actress is loud also already solved: Maria Gabriela de Faria plays the character Angela Spica, also known as The Engineer, in Superman: Legacy.
María Gabriela de Faría previously appeared in the series “The Moodys” and “Deadly Class”, as well as the direct-to-DVD horror “The Exorcism Of God”. The role in the DC actor is now her first major film role and could be her breakthrough. Her character Angela Spica, aka The Engineer, hasn’t been in the DC comics for very long, so she doesn’t have as many adventures under her belt as long-standing Superman villains like Lex Luthor and General Zod. Before that, another character at DC was also called The Engineer.
This is the engineer
Angela Spica does a brilliant scientist who modified her body using nanotechnology and has had superpowers ever since. In the comics, she can transform her body, for example into high-tech weapons, create solid objects with her metallic blood, and connect to computers.
In some comic storylines she is part of the so-called Authority, who will also play a role in ‘Superman: Legacy’ before a possible solo film for this group.
But the first “Superman: Legacy” will hit theaters on July 10, 2025. According to James Gunn, the date should go ahead despite the strike-related restrictions in Hollywood in recent months.
The new ‘Superman’ movie won’t retell the cape-wearer’s origin story. Rather, Clark Kent is already here on Earth, trying to establish himself as a reporter at the Daily Planet and struggling to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage and his human upbringing.
