What exactly awaits us with ‘Joker 2: Folie à Deux’ is still unclear. The sequel to the 2019 billion-dollar hit would be a musical, largely set in Gotham’s infamous Arkham Asylum prison. Joaquin Phoenix returns in the lead role, while Lady Gaga (“A Star Is Born”) appears as Harley Quinn.
“Joker 2” cinematographer Lawrence Sher spoke with the recently said about the sequel, which kicks off in Germany on October 3, 2024, fueling the anticipation a bit: “We are releasing the new ‘Joker’ movie next year and we are currently in the final stages of post-production. It’s quite a risky film. He will surprise you. I’m so excited for people to finally see it.
“Joker 2”: a comedy musical?
What exactly Lawrence Sher means by “risky” can only be guessed at this point. He may be referring to the musical aspect, which could irritate many viewers. The Oscar-winning composer for part 1 Hildur Guðnadottir had already confirmed that there will be several song inserts in “Joker 2”. For this reason alone, you can probably say that the sequel will already be one of the most interesting films of next year.
‘Hangover’ creator Todd Phillips is responsible for the production, just like with the first part. In addition to Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz (“Deadpool 2”) also returns as Sophie. Brendan Gleeson (“The Banshees Of Inisherin”) and Catherine Keener (“Get Out”) also appear on camera. It is not yet clear what roles they will take on. A first trailer for part 2 will probably only reach us next year.
