YouTube cracks the whip: ad blockers must be blocked worldwide

YouTube is apparently expanding its efforts to crack down on ad blockers. And this is probably worldwide.

The platform, which belongs to the Google Group Alphabet, has “launched a global initiative” to “encourage” users to allow ads or subscribe to (paid) YouTube Premium. A YouTube spokesperson explained this to the American media The Verge.

YouTube had already confirmed in June that it would not play videos for users with ad blockers, but said at the time that this was just a “small global experiment”. The American company has now expanded these efforts.

“If you continue to use ad blockers, we may block video playback.”

Whether on a PC or a smartphone: In recent weeks, more and more users with ad blockers installed have been unable to watch YouTube videos. This is also evident from a report by tech blog Android Authority.

The YouTube spokesperson confirmed that the “use of ad blockers” violates the platform’s terms of service, adding that the ads support “a diverse ecosystem of creators around the world” and provide billions of people with free access to their favorite contents.

According to The Verge, YouTube has already made several changes to the way it serves ads on its platform this year.

The company introduced unskippable 30-second commercial breaks in its TV app in May and later began experimenting with longer but less frequent commercial breaks.

YouTube is likely hoping that the long commercial breaks will encourage more users to sign up for the ad-free YouTube Premium subscription. This costs 15.90 francs per month in this country, 9.50 for students.

There is also a ‘family subscription’: for 23.50 francs per month, up to five people get access to YouTube Premium and YouTube Music.

What you should do

Advertising finances content and the people who create the content, and that is also the case with Watson. And unfortunately, criminals try to take advantage of internet users’ fatigue with advertising. They post links to supposedly good adblockers, but these could be spam or malware.

So before you fall for an all-too-tempting ad blocking offer, do your research. We do not mention specific products here. And we really appreciate it if you support us in any way. 🙏
