“Pizza boxes DO NOT belong in a box, please throw them in your own trash,” writes one user on Reddit. He talks about a sign that was recently hung on the door of an apartment building in Switzerland. Ask other members of the Reddit group “Switzerland” “Aren’t pizza boxes recyclable anymore?” he asks.

The person with the username Carcharodona then describes his concern: “I asked my landlord what this was about – because pizza boxes are made of cardboard (and make up half the pile in the building).” The homeowner said the boxes often contained traces of grease and oil and therefore could no longer be recycled.

Oil and grease residues hinder the recycling process

The user is confused. He has lived in the same house in Lucerne for eight years and has never had any problems. Turning to the rest of the group, he asked, “Is this a general rule?” asked.

In fact, many members are commenting on the pizza box issue. “It’s always been this way,” one user writes. Another shares a link to the website of Real, a waste disposal and recycling company from the Lucerne area. Here the company answers the question of whether pizza boxes should be thrown into cardboard boxes.

“No, pizza boxes should be thrown away,” waste management project manager Christianüger writes in his article. Although cardboard boxes themselves are suitable for recycling, oil and grease residue will hinder the recycling process. Leftover food is also often thrown away along with pizza boxes.

“This is very frustrating.”Reddit user on recycling

Other Reddit users offer tips and tricks: “Put water in the sink and let the pizza box sit for a few minutes. “You can then squeeze it into a small ball that takes up very little space in the waste.” Another option: “Reserve and recycle the usually clean top. The bottom half goes to waste.”

But some are also upset about the multitude of recycling regulations. “You actually need a PhD in recycling science to do anything right today,” says one user, expressing disappointment. «I had to reserve two square meters of my flat for recycling. I can dispose of some of the waste on foot, but for the other part I have to go to a disposal station. This is very frustrating.”
