1/8
Salzburg, at the foot of the Alps, is one of the most beautiful baroque cities in Europe.

one

Baroque jewel: Salzburg Cathedral

Salzburg Cathedral is a baroque masterpiece and the center of the city. It stands out as a special architectural highlight in the cityscape. The original building from 767 was destroyed by fire. Luckily, the Baroque replica from 1598 is so impressive that it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its impressive columns, arches, elegant organ and detailed frescoes, the cathedral is definitely worth seeing.

Fly: The concerts held regularly in the cathedral are a real treat. If you do not want to attend an entire concert, you can stop by every day at twelve noon, when the cathedral’s organs will play for about 25 minutes.

2

Volksgarten – garden paradise

Salzburg offers a fascinating mix of castles, narrow streets and wide squares. One of them is the Volksgarten, which is picturesquely located on the Salzach River in the heart of the city. The spacious park invites visitors to spend time together and relax in green areas. There are sports facilities such as a public swimming pool and an ice rink in winter.

Fly: When the weather gets warmer, the rose garden becomes even more beautiful with its statues and fountains. Afterwards, you can enjoy a comfortable picnic under the shade of the trees.

3

In Mozart’s house

Salzburg is the birthplace of world-famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791). You should definitely visit his birthplace at Getreidegasse 9, which currently serves as a museum. Here personal items are displayed on three floors and you can really feel the closeness to the musical genius and his family. One of the most important pieces is the Mozart piano on display.

Peter’s Cemetery and St. Peter’s Archabbey

St. Peter’s Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in German-speaking countries and belongs to the Benedictine order. Time seems to have stopped in this mystical place. Especially in the church, which is decorated with vivid frescoes of scenes from the Bible. As beautiful as the church itself, St. Peter’s Cemetery is equally fascinating. It is Austria’s oldest Christian cemetery and some of the wealthiest citizens in the country’s history are buried here.

Fly: A special feature of the burial grounds are the rock caves in Mönchsberg. They are often referred to as catacombs. They were carved into rocks as burial grounds in late antiquity.

5

Visiting Africa: Salzburg Zoo

Salzburg Zoo hosts 1,500 animals and 150 species in a total area of 14 hectares. The zoo is keen to adapt conditions as closely as possible to the natural habitats of the animal species. In this way, visitors get an idea about the natural lifestyle and interaction of animals. The enclosures blend harmoniously into the city’s landscape, from cliffs to rolling hills where mountain goats live. The heart of the zoo is a 1-hectare savannah area where rhinos, zebras, antelopes and waterfowl live freely. A group of ring-tailed lemurs that can move freely around the zoo is fun.

Fly: Salzburg Zoo is part of the Hellbrunn Palace Park. If you’re in a hurry, you can visit both highlights in one day.

Enjoy Salzburg from the river

If your feet are tired from shopping or sightseeing in Salzburg, you can take a different tour: Salzburg from Sudan. In addition to a panoramic ship, an unusual model is also offered – an amphibious bus that can travel both on water and on land.

Fly: If you want, you can enjoy the city view from the ship this way, as well as other points of interest, such as attending a Mozart concert in the castle or the fountains in Hellbrunn.

7

The most successful movie in history “The Sound of Music”

It is not well known in German-speaking countries, but worldwide it is one of the most successful films in history: The musical film “The Sound of Music” (1965). It tells the true story of the Trapps from Salzburg, who emigrated to America and became famous there as a singing family. The film was shot on original locations in Salzburg.

Fly: Various tours (some including song performances) are organized in and around Salzburg. It’s a fun way to get to know the city.

8.

Untersberg, the city’s (almost) outdoor paradise

Untersbergbahn takes you to the top of Untersberg, the nearest panoramic mountain outside the city gates, in less than ten minutes. From the mountain, which is almost 2000 meters high, you not only get a wonderful view of the city and the Alps chain on the Austrian and German sides, but you can also go hiking, paragliding or mountain biking here. If you come in winter, you can even ski seven and a half kilometers here.
