‘Saw X’ brings terror to Mexico City

The “Saw” horror franchise takes a never-before-explored twist on its plots with ruthless killer John Kramer’s “most personal journey” through Mexico City in this tenth film, which hits international theaters today.

It is located between the first and third lanes, “Saw X” follows the hopeful attempts of Kramer, played by Tobin Bell, to find a cure for his cancer.

Assassin’s infallibility known as “puzzles” He will be outwitted by a group of doctors who promise to save him from the disease, but after they discover that he has been deceived, a new horror game will begin with his ally Amanda Young, played by Shawnee Smith.

Director Kevin Greutert has directed seven films in the franchise, which began its journey in 2004. After bringing dozens of characters to torture, he admits in an interview for EFE that it is increasingly “difficult” to create new ones. blood traps: “We’ve done everything at this point,” he says.

Set designer Anthony Stabley notes that it is novelty in life tests or the death that Kramer’s victims have to go through on this occasion lies in the fact that they touch sensitive points that they have not explored before.

“The emotional journey that John Kramer goes through gives much more character to the traps because they are somehow included in the character (…). In addition, the performances of the Mexican actors improved them,” he explains to EFE.

Terror in Mexico

Another point that refreshes the story is the context in which it takes place, since for the first time in history the cultural aspects of a country sneak into the plot.

“Originally the script was set in Eastern Europe, we were going to shoot in Bulgaria, but then someone suggested that we do it in Mexico and they suggested it so quickly that I knew it was the best option for this film,” says Greutert.

The production team spent more than six months Mexico to create of this piece, which has among its protagonists Mexican actors such as Renata Vaca, Joshua Okamoto, Paulette Hernández and Octavio Hinojosa.

Stabley, one of the most excited to bring the project to Mexico City, sought to showcase everything that attracted him to the city, such as underground bars, modern architecture, haciendas and colonial architecture, as well as Aztec culture.

It all blends into the Saw universe and the aesthetic of the first films: “We wanted to respect the fans and give them that look,” says Stabley.

Film producers, Mark Burg and Oren Koulesthey also tried to satisfy their Latin American followers who have been faithful for years, and on the other hand are aware that Mexico is the first country in the world with the highest consumption of horror films.

But “Saw” has a loyal following around the world, and one of the reasons they believe it’s possible is the “brotherhood” that remains behind the cameras.

“We are still the same six people we started with Kevin. We believe this is one of the reasons why people like it,” Koules tells EFE.

They also consider it a feeling “justice”What generates the violent stories told in each of the films has captivated the public in a special way.

“People like the idea of justice, Kramer It only goes to people who are not good and who have hurt other people and who have done something bad,” says Burg.

The producers are hoping that the film will be successful at the box office so that they can consider a sequel. franchise. For his part, Greutert admits that he is still interested in directing more Saw films: “These films have shaped my career and I am very proud to be a part of them,” he concludes.
