British Prime Minister Sunak says no to 30 km/h zone charges against daughter of ex-president of Uzbekistan

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wants to put an end to the 30 km/h zones that have now been introduced in more and more cities and towns in England. He “put the brakes on the war on drivers,” Sunak told The Sun tabloid.

Government guidelines for moving to 20 miles per hour (about 32 km/h) as a top speed will be reviewed, the Department for Transport in London has confirmed. This is intended to prevent the national switch to 20 mile zones where this is not appropriate, according to a statement from the ministry.

The creation of restricted traffic zones should also be limited, Sunak said. The Prime Minister is expected to attend his first party conference as Tory leader this weekend. However, implementation falls under the authority of the municipalities.

The announcement is just part of a whole package of political measures with which Sunak wants to win motorists to his side. He recently postponed the end of sales of new cars with combustion engines from 2030 to 2035.

The backdrop is that Sunak’s Conservatives are far behind the opposition Labor party in the polls and are heading for defeat in the general election expected next year. The Conservatives were given a glimmer of hope when they were able to capitalize on the backlash against the expansion of the Ulez low emissions zone, which was pushed through by Labor mayor Sadiq Khan in a recent by-election in suburban London. Since then, the Prime Minister has sought refuge in election promises for drivers. (sda/dpa)
