According to the Environment Department of the Principality of Liechtenstein, the number of hunting grounds in Switzerland increased by 8.2 percent each year and the population increased by 8.3 percent. Beavers are most concentrated in the lower Thur valley near Frauenfeld TG and along the Aare and tributaries between Thun BE and Bern.
The Inn is the third largest catchment area in Switzerland. Also, Europe’s longest beaver lives in Samedan GR. The statement also states that the beaver population continues to increase in all regions.
Meanwhile, 20 regions were registered in the Principality of Liechtenstein in 2022. There were no beavers there in 2008. Out of a total of 1402 regions in the two countries, 599 are single animals or couples and 803 families. As the Environment Office also explained, this resulted in a population of around 4900 animals in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
In the winter of 2022, a beaver population survey was conducted for the fourth time for Switzerland and Liechtenstein, after 1978, 1993 and 2008. As stated in the statement, more than 400 surveyors and rangers searched for beaver tracks in nearly 7,000 kilometers of water.
