The number 1 in the world is out at Wimbledon.
Iga Swiatek (22) managed to prevent the end in extremis against the Swiss Belinda Bencic (26, WTA 14), she defended two match balls in the eighth finals on Sunday. Now she can’t do this anymore.
The Polish fails at Elina Switolina (28, WTA 76) in her first quarterfinal participation in the third Grand Slam tournament of the year. Swiatek is defeated by the Ukrainian wildcard holder after two hours and 50 minutes 5:7, 7:6 (7:5), 2:6.
Switolina’s opponent in the semifinals is Marketa Vondrousova (24, WTA 42). The Czech defeated Jessica Pegula (29, WTA 4) from the US in one hour and 55 minutes with 6:4, 2:6, 6:4. In the third set, Vondrousova wins the last five games in a row after trailing 4-1.
The 2019 French Open finalist is in the semifinals at Wimbledon for the first time. In previous years, reaching the second round has been Vondrousova’s biggest achievement at Church Road. (yup)
