Thick and thin safe in the car thanks to new belts
Since seat belts have been introduced, cars have become much safer. However, a traditional seat belt is not suitable for everyone. Manufacturer ZF now produces a belt that adapts to your posture. From ballerinas to bodybuilders, everyone is safe in the car.
Traditional belts tighten in the event of an accident or if you pull too hard on the belt. New cars sometimes have seat belts that tighten before an accident occurs. This means there is no or less space between the belt and your body, preventing injuries. You can read here how great the risk of injury can be due to the space between the belt and the body.
New belts
So new belts are better, especially if it’s an SLL belt. It is not tightened all at once, but in two steps.
The new belt from ZF performs even better in a crash than the SLL. They call it the MSLL belt, which stands for multiple switchable load limiter. This simply means that the belt can continue to adjust tension during an accident. This reduces the injuries you can sustain from the belt.
A big advantage of this belt is that it reacts differently depending on your weight. This means that the body of a person weighing 70 kilograms is subject to fewer forces than a person weighing 100 kilograms. In the event of an accident, your body will not slow down more than necessary.
2030
The new technology is not yet used in cars, but that will change in the future. EuroNCAP will impose stricter requirements on car seat belts from 2030.
This new belt is not the only development from ZF. They are also working on heated belts that will allow you to continue driving electrically at up to 15 percent.
