For violation of Muslim marriage law: 7 years in prison for Pakistani ex-PM Khan London case against Greta Thunberg dropped

It is the third prison sentence against the former Pakistani prime minister in a week: Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were each sentenced to seven years in prison for violating Islamic marriage laws.

A court in the capital Islamabad announced this on Saturday. The couple married in 2018. Bibi’s former husband had accused her of ignoring the prescribed three-month waiting period between divorce and the next marriage, which applies in Islamic family law. Islam is the state religion in the South Asian country.

The leader of Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, lawyer Gohar Khan, described the decision as a “blatant case of political intimidation”. The verdict will be appealed to a higher court, he announced to journalists. It’s an attempt at character assassination.

Already convicted

Only on Wednesday did another court sentence Khan and his wife to 14 years in prison. The judiciary accuses the opposition politician of having hidden income from the sale of state gifts during his time as prime minister from 2018 to 2022. In a separate case involving the leak of confidential diplomatic information, the 71-year-old former cricket star and his former foreign minister were Zaken was sentenced to ten years in prison on Tuesday.

Time and again, prime ministers in the South Asian country with more than 240 million inhabitants are dismissed prematurely – such as Khan in April 2022. The powerful army, which has held half of the state’s power since the state’s founding in 1947, is considered to be crucial to the fall and rise of politicians in the nuclear weapons state where Time itself ruled.

A new parliament will be elected in Pakistan on February 8. The opposition has been greatly weakened by Khan’s capture. The former prime minister is considered unlikely to return to politics.
