Cancer: What is your biggest challenge?

This Sunday, February 4, marks the World Cancer Day, and the World Health Organization (WHO) also remembers it. 1 out of 5 people get cancer during their lifetime.

Cancer is a disease that is on the rise, but theirs survival levels also; especially in developed healthcare systems where patients have access to timely diagnoses and innovative treatments.

It is important to expand health insurance, since there are significant inequalities in the treatment of cancer depending on the country’s development indicator, emphasizes iOn this date, Fedefarm.

For example, in case of breast cancer, Statistics highlight a much higher risk of death in countries with a low development index due to late diagnosis and inadequate access
quality treatment.

WHO published the results of a survey conducted in 115 countries, which show that 61% of countries do not adequately fund priority cancer services and palliative care, as part of universal health care.

Only 28% of participating countries provided additional coverage attention to people who need palliative care, including general pain relief, not just related to cancer.

Faced with this scenario, governments have a great responsibility for strengthening the system and health insurance and that people’s survival does not depend on the country in which they live.

Access to quality medical services enables early diagnosis, and therefore expands the possibilities of timely care for cancer patients, he points out. Victoria Brenes, CEO of Fedefarm.

In the pharmaceutical industry, we continue with research in the oncology field, so we are optimistic about the possibility of having innovative treatments that contribute to the fight against this disease in the coming years,” he adds.

Namely

Data from International Federation of the Pharmaceutical Industry (IFPMA) confirms WHO information, since of the 10 million annual cancer deaths worldwide, 70% occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Cancer is the area with the largest number of treatments in development, because it is not one disease but has more than 200 different subtypes.
