Activists say security forces have opened fire on demonstrators during new protests in Iran’s Kurdish region. According to the Norway-based organization Hengaw, at least 25 protesters were injured on Friday.
The protests took place on Thursday evening in the city of Abdanan in Ilam province. The reports could not initially be independently verified.
Videos from the human rights organization showed police cars, smoke and people shouting protest slogans. It was the first known escalation between security forces and protesters in months. After the wave of protests in the autumn, unleashed by the death of the young Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini († 22), daily life had increasingly returned in recent months.
Kurdish woman Amini was arrested by moral guards in mid-September for alleged violations of Islamic dress code and died in police custody. Mass protests followed. The state reacted extremely harshly and has since executed seven protesters. In the big cities, many women engage in civil disobedience, for example by ignoring the headscarf requirement. (SDA)
