Security man fell asleep drunk: drunk blocked door to shelter – three dead

“An alarm went off, people ran to the shelter. The bunker just wouldn’t open, and that was it. People knocked and knocked for a long time. But no one opened. There were women and children there and no one answered the door. That’s when the rocket hit,” reports the stricken Ukrainian, whose wife died that night in a Russian attack in Kiev.

The attack killed a total of three people, including a child († 9). The government acknowledged on Thursday that the shelter was indeed locked. Investigations are now underway in the Ukrainian capital.

Not the first time the door was locked

A criminal case has been started against the security guard of the hospital to which the shelter belongs due to official negligence. This was announced by Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko (50).

Security would have fallen asleep drunk during the air raid, reports the independent Russian news portal Meduza. Local residents told Ukrainian TV channel Suspilne that it was not the first time they could not reach the emergency shelter.

The leader is suspended

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko, 51, wrote on Telegram that he had asked the presidential office to remove the head of the affected Desnyanski district, Dmytro Ratnikov, from his position for the duration of the investigation.

“The head of the medical facility, who was appointed by the Desnyansky district administration, should also be suspended,” the former professional boxer demanded. Klitschko also announced that asylums in all other districts of Kiev would also be checked. Just a week ago, the military administration of the city of Kiev assured that “no emergency shelters for Kievans will be closed during the airstrike”.

Russia is currently shelling the Ukrainian capital particularly hard. In May, more missiles, cruise missiles and drones were fired at Kiev in a month than ever in Russia’s offensive war that began more than 15 months ago.
