Not even the weak last season can stop Bern’s appetite for football. This season, YB welcomed more spectators to Wankdorf than ever before: 523,751! Makes an average of 29,097. That is a few more than FC Basel had in the 2010/11 season. At that time there were 522,785, an average of 29,043.
The previous highest average across all clubs of 12,235 from the 2011/12 season was pulverized with 13,172. A total of 2.37 million fans attended the 180 Super League matches. This is mainly due to YB – Wankdorf sold out nine times – and promoted Winterthur, which filled the Schützenwiese to the last twelve times.
Because YB has long since broken the mark of 20,000 subscribers (currently there are 20,400), this means for the cup final: there are more subscription opportunities than there are tickets available. Much more! Because the last two clubs (originally) got 13,000 tickets each. Immediately after participating in the finals in early April, YB announced that there would be a raffle among subscribers and all other YB fans would be starved.
This lottery has taken place. But the quota was too small to satisfy all interested parties. But because Lugano could not exhaust its contingent, 2000 tickets came from Ticino and a few more from SFV to YB. “This quota was then sufficient to satisfy all our season ticket holders who were interested in tickets,” reports YB communications chief Albert Staudenmann. In total, about 17,500 tickets went to Bern.
Lugano, for his part, almost romantically sold his 11,500 tickets to women and men in the club’s Cornaredo office. Only people living in Ticino and in the Italian-speaking part of Graubünden were allowed to buy tickets. Lugano fans from the rest of Switzerland had to submit a request by email. It was verified that you were actually Lugano-Tifoso. But the Ticino did…
For “neutral” football fans who are not YB subscribers or Lugano Tifosi, that was the only way to get a ticket. The stadium could have been filled two or three times, which is why the Football Association prefers the final clubs. “The demand from us was huge,” says SFV communications director Adrian Arnold.
Eventually there will be 31,500 in Wankdorf. And the stadium will be in the hands of Yellow Black!
