Bold Swiss Ferrari smuggling stopped: co-driver pretended to be a customs officer

The two Greeks had already crossed the border of Switzerland and Germany. But at Lindau, two customs officers noticed the silver Ferrari F430 Spider (490 hp).

A check showed that the man and his passenger had bought the sports car (new price from 170,000 euros) in Switzerland for about 30,000 euros. They drove to Munich to take the Ferrari to a friend, they told officials.

One of the men quickly tried to end the situation. He pretended to be a colleague and explained that he was also a customs officer in Greece. A clumsy trick. The customs officers quickly figured him out. “He knew nothing about the customs regulations and required documents,” says Sarah Mayer of the German customs to the “Südkurier”.

Why was the Ferrari so cheap?

This was not the only problem. Because the driver had not declared the Ferrari to customs upon entry into the EU. That is why the tax collectors started a tax procedure against the man. In addition, import duties of 9270 euros and a deposit of 1500 euros were due. The Ferrari smugglers were then able to continue.

The customs officers were also shocked by the low price of the sports car. But the driver was able to show a salesman’s invoice. There is nothing to complain about. The Ferrari was sold so cheaply because it was a used car several years old. (jmh)
