British Olivia Maunders (15) repeatedly complained of severe pain. But the doctors at the hospital in Surrey didn’t take her condition seriously. This now has fatal consequences for young people, reports the British “Daily Mail”.

Maunders had been suffering from a rare tumor for months. However, the teen’s so-called Ewing sarcoma went unnoticed. And that despite multiple visits to the emergency room.

Doctors advised her to use a mindfulness app

But that’s not all: instead of taking Maunders seriously, the doctors even advised her to use a mindfulness app. This should have helped her cope with her “indescribable anguish,” as her family reports.

The story began in March 2021, when the young British woman first had an MRI. However, instead of the cancer, the doctors diagnosed a complex regional pain syndrome. It’s a little-known condition often thought to be caused by the body’s unusual response to injury.

Months later, Maunders endured indescribable pain. Her mother, Carol Rolfe (52), can hardly believe that despite everything, her daughter was not taken seriously: “We have often told the doctors how much she suffers,” Rolfe tells the newspaper.

All calls for help went unheeded. Instead, she would have been told to calm down. “I was even told that I was mirroring my mother’s pain because she had back problems. I was not treated at all, I just lived in pain,” said the young Briton.

Brit would only have a few months to live

However, the family was not satisfied with the diagnosis received. “I knew I was in pain and I wasn’t just imagining it,” said Maunders.

Finally, at Olivia’s mother’s insistence, a second MRI exam was ordered – with success. Her tumor has finally been discovered. At that time, however, this was already so large that surgery was no longer an option. Months of chemotherapy and radiation followed.

Although Maunders was allowed to return to school in April 2022, her condition has since deteriorated rapidly. She was only recently told she had only a few months to live.

To save her life, her sister Victoria has now launched a fundraising campaign on the crowdfunding platform “GoFundme”. The call to donate seems popular: 14,700 British pounds (equivalent to 16,500 Swiss francs) have already been donated to Olivia.

One thing is clear: the doctors should have discovered Olivia’s tumor much sooner. The family of the young British woman has therefore taken legal action against the hospital responsible. (dzc)
