Plastic, food containers, empty oxygen bottles and broken objects are everywhere. It looks like a landfill. It may be the tallest in the world. Because: The entire Güsel is on Mount Everest (8849 meters), the highest mountain in the world.
A video that is currently causing a stir shows how the mountains of garbage are piling up there. Specifically, this is the fourth camp that mountaineers must pass through to reach the top. It is located in the middle of the so-called death zone. The air is very thin there.
If Mount Everest was once a piece of untouched nature, mountain tourism has increased significantly in recent years since the first known ascent in 1953. This has helped Nepal’s economy, but with the many adventurers from abroad, the mountain is also the highest garbage dump become in the world. According to National Geographic, an estimated eight kilograms of debris is left behind in the icy landscape for every climber. Both governments and environmental organizations have made it their mission to find a solution to the chaos.
The problem: more and more people want to reach the top, conquer the highest mountain in the world once in their life. In Nepal, at least 454 mountaineers have been allowed to climb in the current spring season. This is the highest number of permits ever issued for the 8,848-meter mountain in one season, the responsible ministry of tourism in the capital Kathmandu announced in April.
Such a permit costs USD 11,000 in Nepal, so a good 10,000 francs. One person usually pays about 40,000 to 100,000 francs for the entire expedition. This also includes amounts for equipment, tents, domestic flights, food, oxygen tanks and a local support team.
According to the announcement, 361 rock climbers and 93 rock climbers from 61 countries have been licensed. Most come from China (96) and the US (87). Seven people from Germany would have received a permit. The spring season from April to June always attracts a particularly large number of mountaineers, as this is when there are the best “weather windows” for the ascent. The number of licenses applied for and granted is expected to increase. (lia/SDA)
