Ten suspected gang members were killed in a shootout with police in northern Mexico, authorities said. The officers opened fire after being attacked by gunmen from three armored vehicles on a country road, Nuevo León’s head of state security, Gerardo Palacios, said Monday evening (local time). Four police officers were injured.
According to media reports, the fighting took place near the town of Mamulique, about 80 kilometers north of the industrial city of Monterrey. According to Palacios, three police officers were injured when their patrol car overturned and the fourth was shot. Numerous weapons, grenades, ammunition and tactical equipment were seized.
Mexico has been suffering from a wave of violence for years. Numerous drug cartels and other criminal groups compete for control of areas of influence, smuggling routes and protection money. They often have ties to corrupt politicians and security forces. Last year, nearly 32,000 murders were registered in the Latin American country with a population of about 126 million. (oee/sda/dpa)
