A small earthquake with a magnitude of 4 on the Richter scale hit an area in eastern France on Monday evening. The quake struck around 9:15 p.m. some 15 kilometers outside the town of Montbéliard near the Swiss border, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring Network (Renass). It gave no information about the damage.
The French earthquake authority said, citing witness statements, that the tremors were mainly felt in the region around Montbéliard and Belfort, as well as in Alsace and the Vosges.
On March 22, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake was recorded in the same area. It was also felt in northwestern Switzerland.
There were already earthquakes near Pruntrut JU and Zinal VS on Monday evening. In Pruntrut, the earth shook at a magnitude of about 3.6 on the Richter scale and should have been felt over a wide area, according to the ETH Zurich Seismological Service (SED). In Zinal, the magnitude was 3.2. The earthquake was probably only clearly felt near the epicenter. (oee/sda/afp)
