In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a new parliament building, while 20 opposition parties boycotted the ceremony. “The new parliament building reflects the aspirations of the new India”Modi tweeted Sunday on the day of the ceremony.

It is “a true beacon of democracy” and reflects the country’s rich heritage and vibrant ambitions for the future, he wrote in another tweet.

The opposition parties argued beforehand that President Draupadi Murmudas, not Modi, should have inaugurated the building. In doing so, Modi violated parliamentary rules. The Indian head of state – just like the German Federal President – mainly fulfills representative tasks, the power lies with the prime minister.

The new Houses of Parliament is part of a government project to replace British colonial buildings with new ones. It is significantly larger than the old building right next to it and is now a museum. (saw/sda/dpa)
