In fact, it should be the vacation of his life. Cameron Robbins (18) from the US state of Louisiana had just finished high school. A trip to the Bahamas should be the perfect ending for him and his classmates – soak up the sun, celebrate, just let your mind wander.
However, the holidays turn into a nightmare. Instead of partying in the Bahamas as planned, the trip ended with a full-scale search. The reason: Robbins jumped aboard a party boat during a challenge. Since then there has been no trace of him. This is reported by the American broadcaster WAFB.
The tragedy happened on Wednesday night, just four hours after the students arrived. Robbins and friends were boarding a party boat at sunset when the fatal jump occurred at 9:40 p.m. Apparently it was a test of courage, the broadcaster continues. The incident happened near Athol Island, a small island in the Bahamas.
Shortly after the jump, Robbins was seen splashing several feet from the boat, then suddenly disappeared from view. Since then, there has been no trace of the high school graduate. The boat remained in the area for several hours hoping to find the teen. Attempts by crew members to find the 18-year-old were unsuccessful.
The Bahamas military is now even involved in the search for the boy. Together with the US Coast Guard, the military is searching the air for Robbins – so far in vain.
The shock runs deep at the boy’s school. According to University Lab School director Kevin George, Robbins attended the school throughout his 13 years of teaching. He was also involved with the school’s baseball team. “He’s an athlete, a great kid, a great smile, a great head of hair,” George told WBRZ.
On behalf of the school, the principal released a statement saying that the University Lab School community is praying for Robbins’ safe return. “In times like these we need to come together and support each other. Words fail to express the concern felt by our entire school community.”
Robbin’s parents don’t seem to have given up hope that their son is still alive. “I have contacted Cameron’s family and at this time authorities are still searching for him in the Bahamas,” George wrote. Accordingly, his parents would have arrived in the Bahamas on Thursday. (dzc)
