The next hot phase in the war in Ukraine has begun. As Mykhailo Podoliak (51), adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (45), announced this week, the Ukrainian counter-offensive has been going on “for days”.
Although the Ukrainian forces, against all odds, quietly and covertly launched the counter-offensive, there seems to be a lot going on behind the scenes.
This shows a video that appeared on a telegram channel of the Ukrainian armed forces. It shows a new tactic with which the troops of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (45) want to break through the Russian front. The Ukrainians use a simple trick to remove the Russian army’s anti-tank barriers, the so-called “dragon’s teeth”.
In the video, the trick is demonstrated using a British Challenger 2 tank. A kind of shovel is attached to the front of the tank. With this, the western tank clears the dragon’s teeth of the Russians. It soon becomes clear that the tank barriers of Russian President Vladimir Putin (70), which he had erected in rows along the front for millions of francs, are not working.
Meters deep trenches cannot stop the tank with the mounted shovel. The pictures show: The Challenger 2 clears the tank traps, even in pits.
The “Dragon’s Teeth” are hump or tooth-shaped concrete barriers intended to stop tanks. It is one of the measures taken by Kremlin boss Putin in preparation for the Ukrainians’ major offensive.
As the “NZZ” writes, satellite images show that Russia has been preparing for the Ukrainian attack for months. Defensive positions consisting of anti-tank obstacles, trenches and minefields stretch for miles along the front line.
It remains to be seen whether the Ukrainian forces can overcome all the obstacles presented by the Russians. One thing is clear: the long-awaited Ukrainian counter-offensive has finally begun. If successful, it should turn the tide in the war in Ukraine. (dzc)
