According to the authorities, the Russian region of Belgorod on the border with Ukraine has been attacked by a “large number” of drones. There is damage in the city of Belgorod itself and in other places in the region.
Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov announced this on Wednesday. Cars, houses and administration buildings were damaged. The flak knocked out most of the drones.
There have been repeated attacks in the region for months. Moscow blames Ukraine for attacking targets there with artillery and drones. According to Russian sources, fighting has been going on in the area since Monday against dozens of “representatives of Ukrainian military units”. On Tuesday, Russian authorities lifted a temporary state of alert and declared the “anti-terrorist operation” ended.
Russia’s defense ministry said it had “destroyed” more than 70 Ukrainian terrorists. Since Monday, two volunteer corps of Russian citizens have claimed responsibility for the attack. Ukraine denied having anything to do with the move.
Governor Gladkow said there were no new casualties following the attacks. Nine people were still being treated in hospital after Monday’s attacks. Gladkow had also spoken of a dead man. Hundreds of people who had fled to safety continued to be cared for in emergency shelters. They were to return home after security forces “cleaned up” the area. The full extent of the damage is still not clear, Gladkow said.
A gas pipeline was damaged in the Graivoron district and a fire started. The repair is in progress. Emergency services were also working on Wednesday afternoon to restore power. Then the water should flow again. After civilian criticism of the attacks from the Ukrainian side, Gladkov said he himself had more questions for the Russian Defense Ministry than they did.
The fact that dozens of attackers with military vehicles and technology could easily invade Russia caused widespread horror in the country. The situation in the region is still considered tense. (aeg/sda/dpa)
