The central UK government authority has reported former Prime Minister Boris Johnson over further alleged violations of lockdown rules in the corona pandemic. As the Cabinet Office confirmed on Tuesday, it has forwarded indications of several offenses in London’s government seat of Downing Street and at the Checkers mansion to police. The responsible police authorities also confirmed that they had received corresponding information.
According to the PA news agency, a spokesman for Johnson spoke of “abbreviated entries in the official calendar” that had come to light during preparations for a parliamentary inquiry into Johnson’s statements about lockdown violations. In this context, the lockdown rules were not violated. Reports from the Times that Johnson had invited friends and relatives to Checkers in violation of lockdown rules were also dismissed by a Johnson confidant, according to the newspaper.
In the course of the so-called Partygate scandal, the Conservative politician became the first sitting prime minister in Britain to receive a criminal warrant – police issued a total of 128 warrants for breaching the lockdown in the British seat of government. A report at the time gave damning testimony to the government.
Because he had repeatedly claimed in parliament that there had been no violations, a committee of inquiry would have to determine whether Johnson had deliberately told the untruth. The result is expected within a few weeks. In the worst case, Johnson risks losing his mandate and thus the end of his political career. The latest accusations shouldn’t make this any easier.
