German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has criticized the persistent actions of climate protesters of the “last generation”. At an EU project day in a Monday afternoon school in Kleinmachnow, east of Potsdam, he said:
He has the impression that changing his mind doesn’t help anyone, but most of all it annoys everyone. “This is an action that I don’t think will help,” said Scholz. On the EU project day, the chancellor visited the Eigenherd school and answered questions from the students.
The climate activists of the “last generation” have been glued to the streets of Berlin almost daily in recent weeks. On Monday, activists had clung to rental cars.
When asked about his own commitment to climate protection, Scholz said, “But I’m not coming to Japan by bike.” Scholz was at the G7 summit in Japan over the weekend and then traveled on to South Korea. He himself has a very negative CO₂ balance with what he does. The cars he is driven around in are very heavy because they are armored, Scholz said.
As for the gender debate, the chancellor said he has been talking about women and men for a long time. “I do that very consciously, so that you can always imagine that at least half of the world consists of women.” Others now speak with abbreviations. “That also works. I think everyone has to decide for themselves.”
At the beginning of his school visit, the chancellor shook hands with many students. Students greeted him in different languages – including Ukrainian. Presenting a student exchange project with the Czech Republic, Scholz revealed his sporting hobbies: “I row, but I haven’t done stand-up paddling yet.” He also met some Ukrainian students behind closed doors.
