Russia’s Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education, Pyotr Kucherenko, has died, the ministry announced on its website.
According to the official statement, the 46-year-old died on May 20 when he returned from a business trip to Cuba with a Russian delegation. He felt ill on the plane, after which the plane made an emergency landing in the town of Mineralnye Vody in southern Russia. But the doctors on the ground couldn’t have saved him, they say.
Since March 2020, Kucherenko has been Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education in Russia. He was married to Georgian-Russian singer Diana Gurtskaya, who represented Georgia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008.
According to media reports, Kutscherenko was critical of the Russian offensive war. In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine.
According to the state radio station Zvezda, the family’s environment speaks of a cause of death related to heart failure – but the exact investigation is still ongoing.
Since the beginning of Russia’s offensive war against Ukraine, dozens of Kremlin critics, generals, scientists and energy bosses have died – mostly under mysterious circumstances.
