In Iran, politicians with a second citizenship are no longer allowed to stand for parliament. Likewise, Iranians who reside permanently in another country are prohibited from engaging in parliamentary activities. Iran’s parliament passed a similar law on Sunday, state news agency IRNA further reported.
The measure is intended to prevent conflicts of interest, state media report. In 2020, a similar law was passed to ensure that only candidates with only Iranian citizenship are eligible to run for president.
The recent execution of former British-Iranian leader Alireza Akbari sparked international outrage. He was charged with espionage and sentenced to death. At the same time, a debate broke out among Iranian politicians about loyalty stemming from his British citizenship.
Today, millions of Iranians live abroad. After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, many of the country’s residents emigrated to Europe, the US or Canada. In the decades that followed, many people left Iran for work, study or because of political persecution. (sda/dpa)
