Turkey Elections: According to Final Result, Erdogan Gets 49.52 Percent Gerhard Richter’s “4096 Colors” Auctioned in New York for $21.8 Million

Even after the official final results of the presidential elections were announced last Sunday, the Turkish president still has to face a second round. Erdogan won 49.52 percent in the first round, the election authority said Friday night. The figures deviate only minimally from the provisional final result.

Erdogan received the majority of the vote on Sunday, but just missed the required absolute majority of more than 50 percent. On May 28, he will again face challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who received 44.88 percent of the vote. Third-placed right-wing candidate Sinan Ogan received 5.17 percent of the vote, Muharrem Ince, who was eliminated before the election, received 0.43 percent.

A higher percentage of eligible voters took part in the vote than in the previous elections: according to the electoral authority, the turnout was 87.04 percent, 0.8 percentage point higher than in 2018. Almost half of the eligible voters went to the polls abroad (49.40 per cent). Here, however, Erdogan received more than half of the votes (57.70)

According to the figures, 800,000 more people voted for Erdogan in these elections than in 2018 – although 4.7 million more people were registered as voters.

The final results of the parliamentary elections are not yet known. According to the preliminary result, the alliance around Erdogan managed to secure an absolute majority of the seats there again. (sda/dpa)
