A couple from Zurich was looking forward to their journey through the Mediterranean: the Peter couple from Wetzikon ZH would experience exciting excursions, good food and relaxing days on the Costa Deliziosa cruise. Instead of happy memories, the trip ends with a nuisance for the Swiss. Due to an alleged bad weather situation in Venice (I), the ship is now heading for the port of Trieste in northern Italy.

It all started on Thursday with a letter from the crew. “I have to inform you that the weather conditions in the northwestern Adriatic will be unfavorable next Saturday,” explains the captain. In such a situation, the staff would not be able to safely carry out the planned stop in Venice. For Marcel Peter (62), this news came as a shock: “We have our car in Venice. Now, after we got off in Trieste, we have to take a bus to our car for hours,” he tells Blick.

Weather conditions just an excuse?

Marcel Peter does not think that the port change is due to the weather. “You cannot say two days in advance that the weather conditions are unfavorable for the embarkation. Moreover, the weather in Venice does not look so bad on Saturday.”

In addition, an employee told the couple in confidence that the Costa Deliziosa would not receive permission from the Port Authority of Venice to disembark again. That’s why you wouldn’t even invest there. Marcel Peter wonders if weather conditions are being used as an excuse to cover up other causes. “This holiday really failed for us.”

The guide from Costa Zurich called Friday morning. But not to apologize for the port change. She informs the couple that the ship cannot dock in Venice after all, because a major strike would paralyze the port. That’s why you have to end the trip in Trieste. And Marcel Peter is stunned: “The tour guide knew nothing about the captain’s message.” There is a great communication chaos.

Costa apologizes for any inconvenience caused

At Blick’s request, the Italian cruise company Costa Crociere regrets the sudden port change. But the weather forecasts are unfavorable. Due to this situation, the Costa Deliziosa cannot safely reach Venice. Transport to Venice is organized for all guests wishing to disembark in Venice. The company emphasizes that the safety of guests on board is a top priority for Costa.

“Due to the extensive logistics that have to be carried out in the event of a possible change of route, such situations are evaluated at an early stage in order to ensure that everything runs smoothly,” said Sabine Biedermann, media spokeswoman for Costa Switzerland, to Blick.
