Open AI boss Sam Altman spoke to the US Senate on Tuesday about the future and dangers of ChatGPT. These were the best quotes:
Sam Altman advocates holding companies accountable for their AI systems. He formally asked to be regulated and said with a concerned expression: “I think if this technology goes wrong, it could go very wrong.”
He continues: “We would like to work with the government to prevent this. We want to be clear about the downside and the work that still needs to be done to prevent it.”
He emphasizes that Open AI is not a classic tech company, but was founded specifically to develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity.
From the point of view of the critics, however, the start-up now deviates from the ideals announced at its foundation. Many people were annoyed that the company disclosed access to its latest products Chat-GPT and GPT-4, but did not provide any insight into the structure and database of the model.
“GPT-4 is good for doing chores, but not for doing chores. You already see people who can do their work much more efficiently with GPT-4. GPT-4 supports them in certain tasks,” says Altman.
ChatGPT will have an impact on the world of work, he says before the US Senate. “To prevent that, you need partnerships with the business community and the government. But above all, government intervention is needed.”
He continues: “We believe regulatory intervention by governments will be key to contain the risks of increasingly powerful models.” The US government may, among other things, set licensing and testing requirements for the development and release of advanced AI models.
Global cooperation in setting such rules is also important, Altman said. The United States should play a leading role in this.
But Altman doesn’t just see red: “But I’m very optimistic about how good the jobs will be in the future.”
He seems convinced that AI can be used to beat climate change and cancer. He’s also not worried about unemployment: “GPT-4 will automate certain jobs and create new jobs that we think will be much better.”
