An appeals court has upheld the conviction of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy (68) for bribery and influence influence. The court in Paris in its verdict on Wednesday upheld the first-instance sentence of three years in prison, two of which were suspended.
Sarkozy is allowed to serve the one-year prison sentence at home under electronic monitoring. However, it remains to be seen whether it will ever come to that. The former head of state can appeal against the decision.
It is a punishment never before imposed on a former president, reports the French newspaper Le Figaro. Specifically, the case is about the fact that the former conservative president allegedly tried to obtain investigative secrets from the lawyer Gilbert Azibert in 2014 through his old lawyer Thierry Herzog in another affair. In return, Azibert was offered help in applying for a post in Monaco. Essentially, this behavior jeopardized the independence of the judiciary, the prosecution argued.
Herzog and Azibert were also sentenced to three years in prison each, with two suspended. The court upheld those verdicts on Wednesday.
As presiding judge Sophie Clément said in the verdict, Sarkozy’s crimes are all the more serious because they were committed by a former president. (nad/SDA)
