The Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna and Marche continue to be ravaged by severe storms. After heavy rainfall, areas along the Adriatic coast sometimes suffered dramatic flooding. Two people were killed in Forlì and Cesena, the Ansa news agency reported early Wednesday morning. A man remained on the ground floor of his home during the flood and drowned. There are also reports of missing persons.
According to their own statements, the Italian fire brigade has carried out 600 missions since Tuesday morning in Emilia-Romagna alone and was there with 400 firefighters. Emergency services rescued people trapped in their homes by the water and motorists stranded in the water.
In the city of Cesena, where the river Savio overflowed, emergency services rescued dozens of people stranded on the roofs of their houses. Elsewhere, a helicopter unit rescued a family with two young children stranded in their home due to the flooding.
On Tuesday there were already floods in Emilia-Romagna and Marche. More than 900 people had to be evacuated as a precaution because rivers and streams overflowed their banks or at least threatened to flood due to the heavy rainfall. Some rail links had to be closed. Schools have also been closed in some cities and municipalities on the Adriatic Sea have banned access to their beaches due to strong winds.
The regional councilor for civil protection in Emilia-Romagna, Irene Priolo (49), issued warning words to the population and announced measures. ‘Don’t be curious, don’t go on the dikes. Stay away from bridges. Don’t go into the basement and don’t move cars.”
The government will now mobilize civil protection teams at regional and national levels. The utmost attention from citizens is expected in this situation, Priolo said.
Given the situation on the ground, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (46) also expressed her “full solidarity” with the people of the affected regions. “The government is closely monitoring the development of events and is ready to take necessary relief measures,” she wrote on Twitter. (SDA)
