ChatGPT founder wants to regulate AI by the state

OpenAI boss Altman before the US Senate on Tuesday.

The head of the ChatGPT developer OpenAI, Sam Altman, has spoken out in favor of government regulation of artificial intelligence (AI). “We believe that regulatory intervention by governments will be important in mitigating the risks of increasingly powerful models,” Altman said Tuesday at a U.S. Senate hearing. The US government may, among other things, set licensing and testing requirements for the development and release of advanced AI models.

Global cooperation in setting such rules is also important, Altman said. The United States should play a leading role in this.

At a meeting of a Senate committee on AI oversight, the 38-year-old technology entrepreneur stressed that artificial intelligence offers great opportunities and can “improve almost every aspect of our lives”. But AI also carries “serious risks,” Altman said. “We can and should work together to identify and manage potential downsides so we can all reap the incredible benefits.”

OpenAI made its ChatGPT chatbot, which can generate complex content in seconds in response to user requests, available to the public in November. This accelerated the race in the IT industry for generative AI systems. Public reactions vary between enthusiasm and great fear. Experts warn that artificial intelligence can be misused to spread misinformation and destroy jobs on a massive scale.
