What is going on with the Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko (68)? He has not been seen in public since May 9. The rumor mill surrounding the dictator’s health is running at full speed. This is known so far.
On the Russian “Victory Day” Lukashenko caused a stir for the first time. The closest ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) only came into the picture briefly. Immediately after the parade, he left Moscow in a hurry. He even missed a state banquet attended by state guests from former Soviet republics.
Reuters news agency reported that Lukashenko looked tired. He wore a bandage on his right hand, but tried to hide it. He looked shaky on his feet. The dictator could not even cover a short distance of about 300 meters on his own. While Putin and his other guests walked, Lukashenko drifted along.
Belarusian political scientist Dmitry Bolkunets (40) wrote on Telegram that an ambulance followed Lukashenko’s convoy to the airport. The dictator then briefly appeared in the Belarusian capital Minsk, where he laid a wreath. But in civilian clothes and not in the usual military clothing. He also did not give a speech, which is customary.
Then Lukashenko showed himself neither in the media nor in public. On Sunday, the rumor mill started again. Putin friend Lukashenko was absent from the important national day “Celebration of the State Flag” for the first time in 29 years. Prime Minister Roman Golowtschenko represented him with a greeting.
It is unclear where exactly Lukashenko is staying. It is quite possible that he is in the hospital. Lukashenko was admitted to a hospital near Minsk on May 13, according to Belarusian Euroradio and Belarusian opposition media Hajun.
Both media wrote on Telegram that around 7 p.m. a motorcade entered the Republican Clinical Medical Center of the presidential administration. All entrances to the hospital were blocked for this. Security forces were deployed on the access roads. About two hours later, the column left the hospital again – with or without Lukashenko is unclear.
There is now a lot of speculation about the health of the dictator. According to some rumors, he is even dead. However, there is no official report on Lukashenko’s health.
On Sunday evening, State Duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin only revealed what illness Lukashenko suffered from. He did not want to share this information. He told Podjom’s internet portal: “It’s nothing special, no Covid. Man is just sick. He probably needs some rest, that’s all.”
On Monday, the press service of the Belarusian government published a photo on which Lukashenko would visit the air force. The president works “in the central command center of the Air Force and Air Defense Forces,” it says. The photo shows that Lukashenko’s left hand is bandaged. As the Reuters news agency reported, his rights were interlinked on Victory Day in Moscow.
Former Belarusian culture minister Pavel Latuschka, 50, who fled into exile, said on Friday that the dictator’s lack of public appearances made it clear that he was “clearly very seriously ill”.
Latuschka also spoke about a heart condition in a speech on Sunday evening. According to him, Lukashenko would suffer from infectious-allergic myocarditis. This is an inflammatory damage to the heart muscle, a response to an infection. Putin then sent doctors to help. These statements have not yet been officially confirmed.
