War objectives “partially” achieved

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov describes Russia’s war goals as “partially” achieved.

The main task was to protect the people of Donbass, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday evening in an interview with Bosnian television channel ATV. “In part we have succeeded in fulfilling this task, but in part we are still a long way from it,” says Peskow. Since the beginning of the war, Russia has used the alleged protection of the population in the Donbass as a pretext for its attacks, occupying and annexing areas outside eastern Ukraine in violation of international law.

Peskov explained the lack of visible successes in recent months by saying that the Russian army would not go to war at all. “Waging war is something completely different, it means the total destruction of infrastructure, the total destruction of cities. We are not doing that,” said the Kremlin spokesperson. In fact, since last fall, the Russian army has been regularly attacking Ukrainian cities and infrastructure objects – especially the energy supply network – with missiles and drones. Cities such as Mariupol, Sievjerodonetsk and Bakhmut have been the Russian war of conquest has turned into ruins Thousands of Ukrainian civilians have already died.

Peskov characterized the losing battles for the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut as merely “heavy offensive actions”. He did not go into detail about the conflict between Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin and the leadership of the Ministry of Defense in Moscow, but spoke only of “excessive emotions”.

Last fall, after a series of defeats in the war he commanded, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin declared that Russia had not even begun to go to war. The words were taken as a threat to further escalate the conflict – even despite a partial mobilization. Yet Russia failed to capture any major territory during the winter campaign.
