The Turkish government has stepped up its “efforts to enforce censorship” and controls on social media and websites ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary and presidential elections, the organization said on Wednesday. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will exercise “significant control over the digital ecosystem to undermine the outcome of the election”.

The media in Turkey is mostly under the direct or indirect control of the government. Content on social media is also subject to strict regulations. Following the devastating earthquake in southeastern Turkey in February, Twitter was severely restricted. Deutsche Welle’s website has been blocked in Turkey.
