In a spectacular US Coast Guard operation on April 29, the rescuers almost became the ones to be rescued themselves. The “US Coast Guard District 8” has now published the photos of it:
The Coast Guard helicopter was deployed to pick up a 76-year-old man from the Carnival Dream cruise ship who had previously experienced symptoms of a heart attack. During the mission, about 300 miles off the coast of Fort Morgan, Alabama, strong winds caught the helicopter and pushed it first away from the ship, then closer and closer to the water.
Exceptional real-time risk management and an excellent pilot helped the flight crew narrowly avert disaster, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement. However, the mission had to be aborted. Only when the weather had calmed down did another helicopter take off, which was able to rescue the patient without further incident and take him to the nearest hospital for treatment. (lzo)
